The Handpan is typically constructed by two circular half-shells of sweet steel joined together at the rim in order to leave a hollow interior, resulting in the characteristic curved shape. The top shell is sculpted in different sound areas, extremely sensitive to the touch. There’s the central note, known as “Ding”, and a variable number of note taps, in a number usually from eight to seven, hammered around the surface and tuned on a single scale.
